Overview:
Fave Games:
I've only really played 2 Kirby games I've disliked out of 11 mainline games and a good deal of the spin-offs! So it's pretty tight at the top, and even what isn't listed I hold in rather high regard (and with some reflection, even my least favorites have a lot of merit...)
1. KIRBY SUPER STAR ULTRA
An all around stellar game that has almost everything I can point to about this series and sing the praises of. As the first Kirby game I played with series investment, there's a lot of bias for it OFC, but that doesn't mean its iconic soundtrack, gameplay and story variety, and a thousand other silly details aren't objectively the best.
2. KIRBY'S RETURN TO DREAMLAND
Time and remakes have made me realize how foundational this game is to my experience with the the series, even if its not the most outstanding on the surface. But underneath its New Super Mario Bros lookin' exterior is an incredible polish supporting an elegant introduction to the modern Kirby formula, which has brought me back to it more than nearly any other Kirby game.
3. KIRBY PLANET ROBOBOT
A nearly undisputed champion of the series - KPR may be where 2.5D Kirby peaked, and is definitely where the modern narrative structure began to hit a stride in thematic complexity (despite a few hiccups). It also boasts one of the strongest art directions of the series helped by marrying its usual fluffy fantasy art-style with techno theming, something that also imbued the soundtrack with unparalleled pizazz!
4. KIRBY AND THE FORGOTTEN LAND
Honestly one of the most perfect Kirby games there is, which is a mindblowing feat as the FIRST fully 3D game! But the passion and talent for the series and what it can do mechanically, narratively, and visually is on full display in this game, boasting one of my personal favorite stories for it's themes relating to animals and life. It'll likely rise higher once I replay it.
5. KIRBY 64: THE CRYSTAL SHARDS
There is so much fondness I hold for the Dark Matter Trilogy despite the failings of it's first two entries, but 64 makes up for all of them and is a beautiful and iconic game. An adorable and flexible artstyle, great level design, and a non-stop banger soundtrack make it a delight to run through as the climax of one of the series' most memorable plotlines.
Honorable Spin-Offs:
Kirby's Dream Course (GOATed) , Dedede's Drum Dash Deluxe (We need more Kirby rhythm games) , Kirby's Blowout Blast (Genuinely amazing lil game)
Fave Characters:
Kirby is host to an incredible array of lovable characters, not just because they look 'n' such, a lot of them have this magnetism that comes from the series' penchant for imbuing silly little guys with notes of compelling characterization or backstory that is endlessly charming and fun to play around with in theories and fan-works.
1. GALACTA KNIGHT
I would not be as in love with this series if not for this character. From his epic appearance leading me to falling head-first into the rabbit hole of his backstory, to the essays and lore bibles I've written trying to contain all of my interest in analyzing and building upon his beautiful yet vague character, he is emblematic of so much of my adoration for this series as a whole.
2. META KNIGHT
Though Galacta is on a whole other level of blorboism, he and Meta Knight undeniably come as a pair, and I am in love with their characters for similar reasons. There's something about these dark, jaded warrior types contrasted against the brightness of the series which makes both shine so much brighter, especially combined with Meta Knight's honest and gentle traits that make him the ideal little goth.
3. KIRBY
There is not in the whole wide world a sweeter and more perfect protagonist than Kirby. Like his series itself, his amazing head-to-toe design is admired superficially yet goes so much further than that. Not BECAUSE there is some dark backstory or truckload of paragraphs needed to explain him, but because his simplicity is so meticulously and lovingly crafted. He is fearfully and wonderfully made.
4. MARX
Marx is an absolutely iconic video game villain, and encapsulates a lot of what I love about the series at it's most basic level. What he lacks in relevance he makes up for in style and novelty as one of the first and most blunt twist villains of the series, mixing the whimsical, mean, and a touch spooky so damn memorably! Video game clowns would be nothing without him...
5. ELFILIN
I love cartoon animals so damn much, and Elfilin's design was already enough to sell me on loving him, but on top of that he's central to one of my favorite stories in the series ABOUT CARTOON ANIMALS, and on top of that boasts his own great arc and dynamics about facing the person you once were and rediscovering your sense of wonder - he is everything.
Fave Songs:
I am a MASSIVE Kirby music buff for someone who knows nothing about music theory and can barely name genres! Because it's impossible to just SAY what my all-time favorite Kirby songs are, I've divided it into type.
Grass Stage
Peanut Plains
A very uniquely "Kirby" brand of music this comes from. Themes like Green Greens, Floral Fields, Popstar (K64), and others all have a similar vibe, but this is my favorite of em all. (Maybe due to KSS favoritism...)
Water Stage
Aqua Star
Classic. Simple and sweet, everyone wants to be her. Submarine Suburbs is a close second for its sheer beauty, and Abandoned Beach is a lovely homage to this queen.
Sky Stage
Above the Clouds
Wins by a mile, and honestly I love this version better than the OG Butter Building, it's just so upbeat and and bouncy! Something about those N64 trumpets.
Ice Stage
Northeast Frost Street
HANDS DOWN one of the most gorgeous Kirby songs I've ever fucking heard. The competition for Ice Stages is STEEP, but this song is just somethin' else. Love what Ogasawara has been brining to the series.
Desert Stage
Dried-Up Sea
BANGER. Has a very unique flavor and is a great example of the kind of songs that make KPR's OST so damn good. Rock Star and Sand Canyon 3 are iconic in their own rights.
Mechanical Stage
Burning, Churning Powerplant
Very close next to the GOAT Factory Inspection, but I love this one To Death. Fits the mood of the fiery powerplant, and makes me think of the drive to save Elfilin this close to the end of the adventure.
Pre-Final Boss
Miracle Matter
Choosing between all of these - songs like Under My Control, Sullied Grace, La Follia - is actually completely impossible. They're always so packed with emotion and tension that elevates them to something beyond the bangers they all already are, but I just LOVE Miracle Matter man! The normal theme fake-out gets me every time!
Final Boss
Void Suite
Unpopular pick but the passion that goes into this suite as a finale to the story of Star Allies and an era of Kirby as a whole is sickening. I can't get over it, or Void as a boss and character...
Ending Theme
Kirby's Dream Land 3 Good Ending
DL3 in has such an utterly distinct vibe in music and visuals, and it's kind of a shame it didn't get picked for any other category. But I can at least give it credit for having the most beautiful ending theme in the series, one that never fails to evoke a deep nostalgia in me even despite my gripes with it.
Misc and Honorable Mentions
Rainbow Resort (KA), Grape Gardens (KSS), Machine Passage (KAR) True Arena (KSSU), Pro-Tips (RtDL), Looming Darkness, Under My Control, Yearning for Yellow, Pristine Office March, Welcome to Wondaria
Fave Copy Abilities:
Kirby's gotta look cute and marketable while he's out there saving the world! But for real, the little hats and outfits they've been putting him in since Super Star are such a delight and make Kirby the king of fashion and function.
1. Parasol
Since day 1 with this series I have ALWAYS been so delighted by the Parasol as an ability. Using a silly little umbrella to whack the shit out of enemies and float around merrily is a few that few other video games offer like Kirby does.
2. Beam
All-time fave, mainly because of the adorable little jester hat, but being a mage is an extra bonus. It's an ability that speaks to me deeply and is fun and versatile as hell.
3. Noble Ranger
It's Kirby with a flower-themed blunderbuss that shoots stars and flower petals and a giant fluffy pirate hat. It's the pure genius of KatFL - mwah-mwah (a kiss for each gun).
Fave Trivia:
Kumazaki's Personal Horror-Themed Art
It's a very fun did-ya-know to throw at people unfamiliar with the Hal dev team, but it's only elevated by seeing the concept art Kumazaki does for the series in it's own style. He's my favorite director and I think it's because of his earnest grasp both on crazy stuff like eldritch themes, and what makes Kirby Kirby. He simply has the range, dahling...
Kirby's Fear of Caterpillars
I always love when character's are given random phobias, it's incredibly charming especially when they're pretty much canonically these all-powerful warriors of light and destiny and what-not. I also enjoy how I can totally imagine why a character known for thoughtlessly scarfing down food might have a fear of the nasty pests that live in tasty fruits.
Meta Knight's Sweet Tooth
This series' ability to balance between the compelling and the silly is pretty much what I live for, and Meta Knight is one of those perfect encapsulations of that. Hal made a genuinely badass character who looks like an armor-clad blueberry, but just to make sure you know that the devs understand the type of character they made, here's a million little hints that he's secretly a glutton for all things chocolate and ice cream!
Dedede's Voice Actor(s)
The Kirby devs have a habit of crafting their own little inside traditions, and one of my favorites is a tradition of the series directors voicing King Dedede. It started with Sakurai (and even continues in Smash Bros), but Kumazaki has taken up the mantle with incredible passion if his performance in KatFL and at the Kirby Music Fest is any indication.
The Apple Juice Song
Bandana Waddle Dee is quite the controversial character, and its sad how many don't know about the amazing character ballad that is The Apple Juice Song from the 2017 Kirby Memorial Arrangements CD (which I actually haven't fully listened to!) In all seriousness it's an incredibly silly little thing, but it did give a rather unexplored character a compelling bit of personality.
